FAQ #6: Resubmitting Articles

Question: Can I resubmit articles that I have distributed before?

Answer: Absolutely!

As a general rule, you should only submit an article once every three months.

Now, here is where we reach a crossroads.

In times past, we had articles that did not get published as often as we thought they should have been. In these cases, we wondered if the titles placed with those articles just were not up to par. As a result, we would change the title of the article and then submit the article again.

In one specific case, I submitted one article three times in one week with three different titles. The first time out, I received no publication notices. The second time out, I received five publication notices. In the third time out, I received 40 publication notices.

This example brings us to my point. Although a single article with a single title should be published no more than once in a three month period, it is acceptable to reconstruct the same article with a new title and then redistribute the article at your leisure.

With one of my clients, we are following this principle with all of his articles. All articles are redistributed on a monthly basis. During the first month, we use the original title, and during the second and third months, we apply new titles to the same article. At the end of the three month cycle, we will observe the click-through's (CTR's) for the articles and make a determination as to which title returned the best results. During the next three month cycle, we will use the best performing title to-date in one month and construct new titles for the other two months.

It should be further noted that multiple submissions of the same article can provide ever expanding results. Between the time of the first submission of an article and the second submission of the article, new publishers and webmasters will have signed up to receive the articles we distribute. Additionally, many publishers may have missed the article the first time it went through to the lists, due to many varied reasons.

May 2006 - For several years, I had encouraged people to retitle articles, solely for the purpose of increasing reach. I no longer encourage that practice at all. In fact, I do recommend against doing so.

There are times when a great article had a bad title, so response was less than it should have been. In those cases, you should retitle it and send it back out after 30 days. But, you should never retitle an article and send it out, just for the sake of getting more reprint results on an already well-received article.

My reasoning behind this is that webmasters keep the article in their database unique, usually based upon the Title of an article. If the webmaster realizes that they have the same article on their site under two different titles, then they may just get irritated and remove all of YOUR articles from their website.

So, sending the same article every few months is a good thing to do, so long as it carries the same title each time out. But, putting a new title on the article, solely for the sake of getting more exposure is something that I recommend against.
