FAQ #42: HTML Anchor Text In The Resource Box
Question: Is anchor text in the resource box frowned upon? Are you limited to the amount of anchor text that can be created in the resource box as long as it is under the character limit?
Answer: The anchor text is in part frowned upon. Let me explain a bit further.
I am not allowed to send HTML in any form, including any href tags, when I send the articles to Email Distribution Groups.
What I have done to get around this is to set up two links in every email distribution that says, Go Here To Get A HTML Version Of This Article.
Within the HTML version of the article that is acquired from my website, I do include the href tags with imbedded keyword text.
The rules that I employ in this regard match the rules of most of the websites that accept HTML articles.
Maximum three href links. You will however want to make one of the three a plain url, in case someone goes to a website and copies the displayed content instead of the the source code. If someone copies the display, your link will be lost altogether is you don't also inclue the visible URL to your website.
Make sure that the first two href tags are for different url's and both have your imbedded keyword text. According to google, the first time a URL appears in an href tag, whatever the keyword text is on that first use of the link is what is catalogued in their database. If all three links carried the same url, the second and third usage would be a waste of your energy and linking real estate. Accordingly, the one link that carries the plain text URL of your website as the imbedded keyword text should be the last link contained in your resource box.
Maximum length of resource box for text resource box is 585 characters.
For the html version of the resource box, 85% of all websites that accept html resource boxes require that we include the target=_blank in the href tag.
Although the recommended maximum length for text resource boxes is 585 characters, for HTML resource boxes, the recommended maximum length INCLUDING all HTML coding is 500 characters.
