    Q&A 40: How Can I Track My Article's Success?

    Q. I got the confirmation you sent out my article I Know What Color You Are.

I just have a few questions. If I read the email correctly my article was submitted to 37,461 (webmasters) Yes?

It's been 5 days since then, if this is correct I have only received 6 confirmation from web masters that my article has been accepted.

I know not every web master will accept my article, and I hope I am not speaking out of turn here, but should I not be receiving a few more them 5 confirmations out of 35, 000 + or does it take longer for confirmations to come in.

    Thanks

    Duffy Rogan

    A. Duffy,

The 37,461 is Webmasters AND Ezine Publishers. Honestly, one should discount that number by about 2000 to eliminate addresses that belong to writers. So you can figure on about 35,000.

There are several factors that affect your response rate. Time is a big factor. The other is "consideration" by those who use our articles.

Your article was distributed just four days ago.

Let us examine the issues that regard notification of the use of your articles.

Although our terms of reprint "request" notification, not everyone will actually notify us. In fact, few will actually do the author notification. I tell people that fewer than 30% of those who use an article will bother to tell us that they have done so. I feel that this number is actually on the high side. I have seen instances where fewer than 10% of the people who have used the article contacted me.

For example, one of my own most often published articles is: "Starting an Ebay Business --- An Online Business Model That Works."

I know that this article has been used more than 400 times. Google documents 241 of these results. I know for a fact that there are another 100 or so websites that have used this article that are not listed in Google's search results. The article has been used in dozens of Ezines, reaching hundreds of thousands of readers. (I have earned thousands of dollars from this one article.)

I have only been notified of the use of this article about three dozen times. That is about 9% of the total users who bothered to contact me tell me that they used the article.

90% of those who contacted me about publication were ezine publishers. With the exception of one or two webmasters, I did not receive notice from the websites who used this article.

I find out where an article has been used utilizing three methods:

    1. Author Notification emails.

    2. Searching for an article in search engines.

    3. The Referrer URLs in my site statistical software.

Everytime I distribute an article, I put six links at the bottom of the article on my website, pointing to six search engines. And, the url that is constructed is designed to pull up results based on Author's Name in quotes and Article Title in quotes. The more accurate way to track is to use a unique sentence from the body of the article, but I have not yet incorporated that into my systems.

As far as time considerations. You are running about average for the first four days.

Polling I have conducted with ezine publishers indicates that they will use an article in their ezine:

    1. 42% will use the article within two weeks after they have discovered the article and decided to use it.

    2. 58% will use the article sometime between two weeks and three months after they discovered an article and decided to use it.

"After they discover an article" is also important. When I was publishing my ezines, I would set up a folder to catch incoming articles. Once a week or month, I would sort through the incoming articles, and I would move the ones I thought I might use at some future point into a Keeper's folder and discard the rest.

Then as I would begin work on the new issue of my ezine, I would visit the Keeper folder to decide which article will best suit my mood for an issue. I actually used articles as far as nine months after having received it.

(Some people misdirect publication notices to my distribution address. In those cases, I always forward that information on the the actual Author. I mention this because there is one lady who publishes an ezine and misdirects notices to me. She always surprises me because she is notifying me of publication of articles I have distributed more than two years ago. Further, when she sends the notification, she just replies to the original message... this is okay for me. I will forward it to the author. When she replies to let me know that she has published the article, I look at the time stamp and see that she is working from the original distribution copy done so very long ago.)

Each publisher has a different system for how they build their ezines. Webmasters also have their own systems for adding articles to their websites.

Many webmasters take care of their websites as a weekend hobby. They might only process new articles once a month or every few months.

One final factor in the time issue, when we must rely on the search engines to tell us where an article might be located, this can take quite a bit of time as well.

Some article sites are spidered daily or weekly. Some sites that use our articles are spidered monthly or every few months. Unless that site has links to it from a third-party website that is already in Google's database, Google will likely not spider it at all.

On the testing I have done, Googlebot follows a process that will affect how quickly new uses of your article will be archived in the Google database.

There are generally a few pages on a website that Google will re-spider weekly. For example, thePhantomWriters Articles Index page will be spidered by Google every three days. For some sites, this could be every month.

On the first pass, Googlebot will record any new links found on that page. Those new links are added to Googlebot's schedule. Then the following pass, Google will come back to those new pages that have links to them.

On my website, this is an quick process. They will come in one day one and get the new links. On day four, they will return and spider those new url's. Since I direct link to the article, then Google will read the actual article on day four.

(Since Googlebot is arriving on my site every three days, the day one listed in the example above could be day one, two or three from the distribution date. So, the day four in the archiving schedule could be day four, five or six.)

On other article sites that use a tree structure for the placement of the article, Googlebot will start at level one on day one, unless they check the deep directory on every pass. So, on day one they hit the top level directory. (Most sites are also on a weekly rotation.) On day eight, they will hit the second level directory. On day fifteen, they will hit the third level directory. On day twenty-two, they will finally reach your article for archiving.

Generally, within one to two weeks of spidering, the spidered page will appear in the search results.

It has been my experience that Google will archive a new webpage faster than all of the other search engines.

I like instant gratification too... always ... But, that is just not a practical consideration when we are tracking the use of our articles. At the end of one week, you will have some tracking results to see. At the end of one month, you will have considerably more tracking results to see. At the end of the first month, you might have a good feel for how well an article might do for you. Six months down the road, we will have the best basis to work from in order to understand the effectiveness of our work.

This is the reason why, when I first began my business, I required a six month commitment from my customers. I no longer require a commitment from my users to keep using my service, but I do encourage it.

I believe 100%, if someone stays with my service and distributes 6 articles in 6 months, then they will be more than happy with their results, and they will continue to use my service for years to come.

For those who have stayed with me that long, only four have left me. One left because he changed his business model, but he still recommends me to others. Two others who have left have done so because they have put their online businesses on hold while they deal with medical issues. One more is on a hiatus.

Your article will continue to be published in ezines and on websites for years to come. For several years, you will continue to discover places where your article has been used and you were never notified of the fact.

I know this is lengthy, but it is intended to show you all of the possibilities as they relate to tracking the publication results your article.
