FAQ #33: Phantom Writers EmailQuestion: Too Many Emails...Answer: This seemed like an odd message for me to be receiving from someone. I ended up having a lengthy discussion with the person who contacted me. In doing so, I learned that there is a new Spoofing technique being used to spam others, leaving the person receiving the mail with the idea that the email in question was sent by someone from my domain. I decided that rather than to present the whole conversation to you, that I would instead summarize our discussions. In my first response, I passed on some information to let the person know the nature of my mailing activities. In every emailed article we send out, the email address of the group we submitted the article to is listed on the ninth line of the message. We only submit to double opt-in email groups on YahooGroups, Topica, MSN Groups, Google Groups, and SmartGroups. We only direct submit to three or four publishers who have advertised their willingness for us to direct submit to them. Of the 130+ groups I can submit articles to, I personally own and manage more than 80+ of them. Any email, with only a title and a website to go to, are not from me! If you receive anything like this that appears to come from my site, look at the headers of the message, the actual senders of the messages are spoofing my email addresses. This is a practice that some spammers have taken up. In fact, just over a year ago, I posted a message on my site concerning another set of spam that was being sent by other people as if it was coming from my domain. I address that issue here on my site: FAQ #10 - Strange Emails from thePhantomWriters.com What he was telling me about is a new kind of spam spoofing my email addresses. I assure you that I am not the originator of these messages. I am a sole-proprietorship, and my wife and I are the only people who have legitimate Phantom Writers email addresses. (Of course, I do have email forwarding accounts set up on the site for my clients, but these are not real email accounts.) Like I said, if you were to look at the header data of the messages, and find someone who is knowledgable enough to interpret those for you, you will find that I really am not the source of the messages. Instead, I am just being targeted by spammers who are spoofing my email addresses. Whenever I submit an article for my clients, the return address is always from a known email address that everyone who receives our articles will recognize @ article-distribution.com The only mail that gets sent from thephantomwriters.com domain will be any autoresponders that are ordered by someone, and any communications between my clients and myself. One final note on this subject. If you ever receive an email or a notice "from" thePhantomWriters.com, do notice how thePhantomWriters domain is indicated. When I send out any communications regarding this domain, I cap the letters like this "thePhantomWriters". Many spoofs in circulation that would appear to come from me have capped the letters incorrectly. If you ever see a message that shows our domain like this "Thephantomwriters", then it definitely did not come from me. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.
