FAQ #22: Sales Copy in the Article Body

Question: Comment from one of our Group Managers: "There have been a spate of writers including promotional stuff within the body of their articles and I've been turning them all away. I'm going to have to stick with this restriction and keep the promotional link and invitation to the resource box only."

Answer: Within the scope of our program, we have always told our writers to leave the promotion of their businesses to their resource box (the short informational text at the end of the article that tells the reader about the writer).

Occasionally, a writer comes along that believes it is okay to promote their business directly within the copy of the article.

Granted, the writer has the right to publish any information the writer so desires in his or her articles.

However, the people who control our distribution networks also have the right to approve and reject any submission based on their own rules and guidelines.

The writer who has built their online success by creating free-reprint content that gets published on a regular basis has a gift. That gift is the ability to educate and inform the reader within the article without crossing into the territory of the advertising informercial style of copywriting. There is a time for sales letters, and there is a time for educating readers.

As writers of promotional articles, we need to stay focused on the idea of educating our readers, and we need to commit ourselves to doing so without sounding preachy or sounding like an informercial.

Many of our distribution moderators strictly prohibit pure-play advertising. These same moderators often take a stand also against promotional articles that cross the line between educating and selling.

A good promotional article should always educate and inform the reader within the body of the article, and it should also restrict all sales copy to the Author's Resource Box.

I bring this matter up only because the above comment was filed by one of my fellow content moderators. I respect the wishes of all of our moderators, and I strive to help you to put together your articles in such a way that you can get the widest possible distribution for your articles. The above described content moderator controls a list that reaches 1600+ responsive publishers and webmasters.

What you have to ask yourself is how important it is to you to put sales copy inside of your article. If you would like to keep the sales copy inside of your article, then I must inform you now that your article will reach 1600 fewer publishers and webmasters than you had expected to reach using our service.
