How To Avoid Being A Victim Of Crime
Copyright (c) 2007-2012 Gerald E. Veale
The chances are very high that you or someone close to you will be involved in a crime during your lifetime. It is estimated that a crime occurs in this country every seventeen seconds. None of us can predict where, when, or how we may become somehow involved in a crime, so it is very difficult to prepare ourselves for this type of problem unless we think about it beforehand.
This is unfortunate. This is also the truth. So, what can you do to either minimize the impact of a crime or deter a criminal from committing the crime against you?
The most obvious would be to carry a handgun. Not a practical solution for most of us. Even if you happen to live in a state where this is a legal option, the mind-set you need to use a gun to protect yourself or others is not one most of us have or can acquire. You must be willing to live with possibility of shooting and killing another human being. All the people I know could not cope with the consequences of such an extreme decision.
Guns are better left to the Police, most of whom never need to resort to lethal force. True, times have changed and our world seems more dangerous but a Police Uniform still carries a lot of drag in most situations. My dad was a Police Officer in a large city for 39 years and never drew his weapon and had a fine career.
There are many superb alternatives that may prevent you from becoming a statistic of crime. When you investigate what's out there and learn easy ways to empower yourself against the average goon, a real feeling of safety is awakened in you. This is not a false state of mind. Remember, however, that all you want to do is get away and then report to Police as necessary.
Most people are of the impression that bad things will always happen "to somebody else" until something goes wrong in the course of their own everyday life. It is really the smart person who takes the time to find available options for personal protection and then initiates positive action by choosing those best suited to themselves. As importantly, you must also take the additional amount of time to prepare and think about ways to avoid and divert an attack.
Let's investigate some tips to succeed in avoiding attacks.
1. If you find yourself in an undesirable situation, first employ the obvious idea of using a cell phone to alert someone of your situation. If a cell phone is out, try to remember the last public telephone you passed. If you do need to leave the car or the area, do your best to remain in the shadows, if it is night; or move away from the street whenever possible, even in the daytime.
2. Also, you always want to have a deterrent to startle anyone who wants to do you wrong. A whistle on your keys, a strong flashlight, or better yet; a personal safety device such as pepper spray, mace, a loud electronic alarm, a stun device, or any of the large collection of other such "tools" readily available to simply startle or temporarily disable an attacker to allow you to flee.
3. Your primary objective is to cause enough noise, confusion and general disruption so the assailant decides there is an easier target than you; thus giving you just a fleeting moment to escape from the immediate threat. Never turn your back to any assailant.
4. Be aware that most attacks come from the side or from behind; so keep this in mind and use your eyes and ears and have your personal alarm or pepper spray in hand when walking to your car in the parking lot at the mall, work, grocery store or elsewhere. Simple tricks also help. If carrying a bag of groceries, throw it in the air or at your attacker while spraying them with mace or pepper spray and yelling as you back away, always keeping the spray aimed at the attacker.
5. Keep it simple; the idea is to get away. Spend fifteen minutes a month thinking about or, better yet, trying out your pepper spray or stun gun just to familiarize yourself with how they work. In a very short time you will become comfortable knowing how to activate each type you carry and it will become an extension of your hand.
Until my next installment please stay safe and begin to investigate the safety tools available to you. In your search you will quickly find that there is a virtually endless variety of possibilities easily accessible to anyone.
Many require very little training and practice to become proficient enough to keep you and others safer in a lot of different situations. You may find, as I have, that these alternatives to deadly force are far and away more appealing because they rarely have civil repercussions as no lasting damage results to an attacker.
Each of us, of course, needs to investigate what is legal where we live. Most reputable dealers provide this information to the consumer before allowing a particular item to be purchased. Pepper spray may not be allowed in all locations whereas personal alarms with very high decibel levels are rarely restricted. The same can be said about Tasers and stun guns as well.
You need to check before getting in a bind by trying to do the right thing and end up doing a wrong thing yourself. Regardless of where you reside there are several non-lethal but very effective methods available.
I will explain a lot of alternatives that you can use, but you will need to implement them with some practice and a healthy dose of common sense. Common sense is important because the last thing I want to see happen is for you to get overly confident and think you can easily escape every dangerous situation that might occur in your immediate environment. You should always try to take the safest course through your daily life so that you remain as happy and healthy as possible while still having fulfilling adventures each and every day!
