925 Jewelry Means What?

Knowing and understanding the necessary markings that identify sterling silver jewelry is important when purchasing anything that boasts "silver" in the name. It is a required step in the production process that is controlled by the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) that all types of silver jewelry be labeled accurately as to their true silver content.

To simplify this step in the process, the FTC has created a series of stampings that signify the silver content included on each piece of jewelry. The highest level of silver content most usually used in jewelry today is 92.5 percent which is dictated by the United States government. If the proper content is used, the piece will bear one of the following FTC approved stamps:

• "92.5" • "925" • ".925"

Some appropriate titles will include "silver", "sterling", "solid silver", or "sterling silver". When making a purchase that is of larger proportions, it is necessary to exercise caution and to check the silver jewelry for authenticity.

Because there is such an abundance of this precious element known as silver, there is of course a large amount of spectacular jewelry to show for it. There have long since been amazing designs of jewelry, service pieces, and many other items that have been boasted through the years in history as being landmarks in the silver production. The historical time period of Paul Revere and his awe inspiring designs from silver have passed through the generations to inspire jewelry makers today in their production of both costume jewelry and solid sterling silver jewelry as well. Due to the iridescence of the bright element, many people prefer to wear silver jewelry for its brightening effect.

Choosing the best silver jewelry you can afford to compliment your outfit. Your personal taste is all that is necessary in choosing the best pieces to compliment you. Whether you are searching for a small ring, or an ornate necklace, silver jewelry is one of the easiest ways to add sparkle and attitude to your over all look.

Using silver jewelry as gifts is also a fabulous idea. What better way to say "Thanks"," I love you", or "Happy Birthday"? Silver jewelry is available in such a vast number of designs and styles that your choices are virtually limitless when it comes to choosing the best piece or design available. Consulting a trusted jeweler would be an asset when shopping for the best silver content jewelry.

Keep in mind when purchasing your silver jewelry that the quality of your jewelry will adjust according to the amount of silver content contained in the piece. You can expect to pay more money for a higher content of pure silver. Because of the softness of pure silver, it is almost never made into jewelry until the element has been strengthened by adding another small percentage of another alloy such as copper.

Both costume silver jewelry and sterling silver jewelry are wonderful additions to any jewelry collection.
