Narconon Vista Bay Saves a Life
Copyright (c) 2007-2010 Will Penn
Narconon Northern California: "It feels really good to be standing here right now," Matt says. He lowers his eyes for a moment, takes in a deep breath, and looks out to the seventy people that have come together to celebrate his success. His parents, Lola and (shit, I didn't write down his Dad's name), sit in the front row, their eyes filled with pride at the realization that they finally have their 30 year old son back. Yes, he's been gone for 14 years battling drug addiction.
Matt was no different than most teenagers. He hung out with his friends. He played sports. In fact, he lettered in football as a sophomore, a feat most cannot accomplish. Where his parents could so clearly see his potential, Matt could not. At 16, he started experimenting with crystal meth, a highly addictive stimulant, and was welcomed into the group of kids who were doing the same thing. At first, Matt was relieved. His anxieties and fears seemed to go away in his altered state of mind. By the age of 18, he was full on addict. His experimenting had turned into a lifestyle; a lifestyle that consisted of drugs, crime and jail. At 21 years old, he was out of work and his life was out of control. He turned to crime as a means to support himself and his habit. He spent so much time in jail that he thought if he was out for just 2 months that he was doing pretty damn good. But the cycle took its toll on not only him, but his family as well.
His parents began looking at ways to help him. They tried going through legal channels as Matt was on parole and this limited their abilities to send him to their program of choice, Narconon Vista Bay in Northern California. In fact, the State of Oregon would not let Matt attend the Narconon program 7 years ago. Instead, they placed him in a state run program that simply was not equipped to handle the problems that most addicts face. "We tried going through the corrections to get Matt help. But what I've come to realize is that they are really good at putting you in jail or half-way houses, but they don't offer the full spectrum of treatment that an individual needs," Matt's dad explained. One program even required that Matt have thirty days clean before they would even admit him. "If I could get him clean for thirty days, then we wouldn't have needed their program, now would we," his mother exclaimed.
Matt's experiences in the two state run programs he attended were filled with anxiety and fear, the same feelings he had been running from as a high school student. Within 2 months of each program, he was getting loaded again and getting locked up again. The NA meetings, the group therapy and the sober living environment were not enough to keep Matt clean. His parents were at a loss. Everything they had tried failed. Matt had run his course with them. His father knew he was on a suicide mission; that if he continued, he would be dead or locked up for good. His parents were ready to cut him off, but they decided to try one last time. His Mom got on the internet and, once again, came across Narconon. She picked up the phone and called determined that one way or another she would get her son to the Narconon Vista Bay program even if it meant bypassing legal channels.
While Matt was once again spinning out of control, even stealing his parent's car, Lola and (Dad's name) were strategizing with the staff at Narconon Vista Bay on how to save his life. Despite the legal problems that Matt faced, the staff at Narconon eased Lola's concerns and in her own words, "made it happen." The staff ensured that Matt's legal issues were handled. The final step in getting Matt to Narconon; he needed to return with the car and get on a plane.
From behind the podium, he says to the crowd, "I'm really glad I got on that plane." Matt looks at his parents and whispers, "Thank you."
14 years of abuse. 14 years of crime. 14 years of hell. Matt now has a chance at living a new life. He sees how he has hurt himself, his family and society. The Narconon program is unique in that there are no required meetings to attend after completion. There are no group therapy sessions. There are no steps to follow. Narconon's philosophy is to increase the drug addiction awareness of those suffering to a point that they can make positive choices and live a drug free live without anxiety and without fear.
Matt is now able to spot what condition he is in, meaning what state of mind he is operating in, so that he can control his own life and where it is headed. He no longer is caught in the mentality that being incarcerated is a normal state of living. He is able to spot and handle those people who would try to bring him down. Completing the Narconon program was not easy. There were challenges to overcome, demons to face, and baggage to let go of, but Matt has done it. He is now a graduate. "I can say with sincerity I'm happy and I'm happy to be sober."
His father stands up and joins his son in front of the crowd. "To everybody, I can't say how much this program has done. I can hear it in my son's voice. I can see it in his attitude. I'm confident in Matt and I believe in him. From what I see right now, just the fact that he could get up here and talk in front of all of you, without resistance and without breaking into a sweat, shows me a change. This is his life. He's got to do this. The return on investment will be worth it."

Opiate addiction is one of the hardest addictions to overcome.
The physical withdrawals can be so intense that many fail or find
themselves rushing to the methadone clinic or signing up for the
new wonder drug, Subaxone. However, treating this type of
addiction with these so-called 'withdrawal' drugs doesn't make
sense. Haven't we learned through the failed methadone programs
that this simply does not work?
