How To Select a Spotlight
Copyright (c) 2008-2023 Magnalight
All the lights run on 12 volt power, which means they can operate off any vehicle or aircraft system, including heavy equipment. Typically, they are plugged into cigarette lighter sockets, but they can also be direct connected to the battery or any portion of the vehicle's wiring system.
All of our spotlights come with a 100 pound grip magnet and a 180 degree hinge. The hinge in is under tension. Once they tilt the light, the hinge holds that position.
The ML series has no handle. It simply mounts via magnet and offers a complete 180 degrees of vertical positioning. We sell a lot of these after hurricanes and other calamities. I haven't figured out why yet.
The HML series has everything the ML has but includes a handle for handheld use. The beam has only about 130 degrees of vertical positioning because of the handle. This appears to be the most popular configuration and it is unique to the Magnalight.
The MUL series has the magnet, the 180 degree hinge, and a handle. The light sits upright, so it is much taller than the HML. The beam has a full 180 degree range available. This is a very popular light with cable contractors and electric utility companies.
My cable is cut off rather frequently to my home due to all the construction in the area. The provider dispatches their techs to sort it out and I have acquainted them with my products. Free samples go a long way to improving broadband connectivity. I may very well have the fastest data connection in Dallas. The contractors love the MUL and the provider's techs like the HML best. Their preference is based on the type of vehicle they drive. Contractors drive simple pick ups and the techs are driving a service truck.
The "1" lamp is a flood. It is a good work area light with an effective range of 20-40 feet. Techs would use the light to work on something close to them. The flood light won't blind the techs if they have to continuously stare in the direction of the light.
The 2,3, and 4 lamps project a spot beam and are effective when a tech mounts the light on the truck and points it at a pole, yard or alley that is in the distance. The right choice is based on distance and brightness. The 2 is the least bright and the 4 is the most bright. The 2 can project a beam that someone could read a book by to about 125 feet. The 3 is effective to about 175 feet and 4 is effective to 250 feet. The field of brightness is about 60 feet wide at the maximum effective distance.
3 Lamp is by far the most popular. It provides the most light for the dollar. 2 is effective in heavy fog and rainy conditions because of an inverted reflector. 4 is unbelievably bright because it is a halogen infrared, but costs more than any of the others. We also have a "blue eye" lamp that is popular for inclement weather. The 3-B simply has blue filter over the 2 lamp to cut down on reflective glare.
The Magnalights are exceptionally durable and weather proof. There is no real way to destroy the light. The lamps will expire, but can be replaced. We sell R-1, R-2, R-3, etc. as replacements.
Finally, the Magnalights can be taken away from a the vehicle with a separate battery pack. We provide such a pack in the form of a Starter Up, which can power a Magnalight for 5+ hours. The unit can also be used to jump start a vehicle's battery.
The RMUL-M is a bit different. It contains a battery that allows the light to run for about 45 minutes. It is the least bright light, effective only to about 80 feet. It can be recharged with either a wall charger or a charger that operates off of the vehicles 12 volt system (cigarette lighter plug). This light can't take the same level of abuse as a Magnalight, but its price point is much lower. These lights are reasonably strong, but cannot withstand a lot of abuse. When the lamp or battery fails, the light will likely be discarded and replaced. It's price point is far lower than the Magnalights

H.I.D. lighting system delivers instantaneously 3 times the light
output of conventional halogen headlamp, consumes only 35-watt
per capsule (VS. halogen's 55-watt per bulb), and has a life
expectancy of 5 times longer (2000 hr. or more VS. 500 hr. or
less). The luminous intensity and color of HID is truly like
harnessing the brightness of the sun. You will be able to see
