Ann Arbor, MI Offers A Lot Of Year-Around Family Fun

Copyright (c) 2009-2012
(See This Article in its Original Format.)

Ann Arbor, Michigan is the home of the University of Michigan, a leading institution of higher education. Ann Arbor is a wonderful place to visit. The University is co-mingled with the city and greatly expands the cultural places and events available in the area.

The University offers several museums which are open to the public, usually only for a small donation. Near the central campus area are the Art Museum, the Museum of Natural History, and the Kelsey Museum of Archeology.

  • The Art Museum has a great collection and has recently expanded their facility.

  • The Museum of Natural History also has a planetarium.

  • There are several performance venues in town and nearly always a very wide variety of musical performances available. The U of M also has two carillons which provide periodic performances, as well as tours. One is located at Burton Tower on the main campus, and one is located on the north campus.

Another fun place for kids and adults is the Ann Arbor Hands on Museum, located in the old firehouse near City Hall. The museum has many interactive science displays and demonstrations, as well as a gift shop.

The city of Ann Arbor has dozens of city parks. One of the largest of these is Gallup Park on the Huron River. The park has miles of pathways, many paved, boat rentals, playgrounds, fishing, and other activities. It is also possible to rent canoes for trips down the scenic Huron River.

The U of M has the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum, both beautiful places to stroll and relax.

There are also numerous opportunities to either watch or participate in sports. The U of M Football team plays on Saturdays throughout the fall at the famous Michigan Stadium. Crisler Arena, next door to Michigan Stadium hosts basketball games, as well as other events. There are also hockey, swimming, diving, volleyball, track, and gymnastic events, just to name a few.

Check well in advance for tickets, especially for football games. Football Saturdays in Ann Arbor are a fun and memorable experience, even if you can't get in to the game. It is sometimes possible to catch a practice by the Michigan Band in the fall, as well.

For participating in sporting activities, the city has the Washtenaw County Recreation Center, the Ice Cube, the Y, city pools, bike paths, and bike lanes on many city streets.

An amazing spectrum of food is available throughout the city. Zingerman's Deli, though a bit pricey, deserves a special mention because of their rich offering of amazingly yummy foods. Some food establishments come and go, and others have been around for decades, but there is no lack of opportunity for great food.

Each summer during the last week of July, the city transforms itself for the Art Fairs. All of downtown and campus is covered with artists booths. Several different art fairs cover all genres of art, from exquisite fine art, to all ilk of crafts. Several stages are located throughout the city for the art fairs and live entertainment is plentiful.

Ann Arbor is a beautiful, tree filled city with many bike and walking paths. Public transportation is readily available, with guides available on most buses, as well as online. It is wise to take advantage of the public transportation or bike paths because parking is often a challenge, especially for large events. Ann Arbor is a great city with lots of things to see and do. Downtown is nearly always alive at night, as well as during the day. Go visit and have fun!
