Pearl Care

Written by:

Pearls are often a girl's first significant pieces of jewelry. Or they can be given as a gift for an important life milestone such as coming of age, graduations and marriage. Often, Grandma's good pearls are passed on from one generation to the next.

As a result, I wanted to share a few pearl care tips with you to keep your pearls beautiful now as well as in the years and decades to come.

First A Bit About Pearls

Pearls are organic gemstones formed entirely within an oyster or other mollusk. So, result, pearls are relatively "softer" than diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds and other familiar gemstones. Also, pearls are set and strung differently than most familiar gemstones.

Wearing Your Pearls

Pearls are organic just like you and me. So, pearls enjoy a bit of moisture and a touch of the natural oils from your skin. Like us, pearls do not like acids, dryness, high humidity, sustained bright lights and many chemicals. Here are a few tips for wearing your pearls every day:

1. Put your pearls last after you have finished with perfumes, cosmetics, skin and hair products. Just to be safe, I like to wait just a few minutes to allow the products to dry. Also, to avoid snagging, I like to put pearls on after dressing as well.

2. Remove your pearls before coming into contact with any cleaning products, for example, take off your rings and bracelets before washing dishes. If you're like me and tend to splatter everywhere, consider taking off your necklace and earrings too.

3. Take off your pearls before any strenuous activities and exercises. This also includes swimming in both salt and fresh waters as well. Our sweat tends to be a bit acidic so it would be better to avoid pearl contact. Also, most freshwater pools use chlorine or acid. Next, water immersion in both salt and freshwaters can effect the stringing and setting of your pearl jewelry. It would be best to avoid contact.

4. Remove your pearls first at the end of the day. This can help avoid snagging and other complications. Also, take them off before showering, cleansing and other grooming.

Steer Clear

Just like you and my skins, there are a few things that should avoid direct contact with pearls. Here's a sample list:

1. Chlorine

2. Bleach

3. Any vinegars

4. Ammonia

5. Alcohol

6. High heat

7. Rapid heating or cooling

8. Intense and direct light for a long duration

9. Insect repellant

10. Fruit Juices

11. Acids of any kind

12. Acetone nail polish remove

13. Industrial strength liquids

14. Cleaners

15. Lye

Just in case – if your pearls come into contact with any of the above chemicals, you can help by cleaning the pearls with very soft, lint free cloth dampened with very warm water and a bit of pure or light soap. Rinse carefully and completely. I like to wash and rinse my pearls in a colander lined with cloth on the inside. Then, dry flat on a moist lint free cloth.

Also consider taking your pearls to an expert jeweler for additional cleaning and inspection.

Daily Care and Cleaning

After a day or evening of wear, give your pearls just a light dabbing with warm water and a lint free cloth. Let the pearls and settings dry flat on a moist lint free cloth as well. Make sure your pearls are dried before you wear them or put them away. Wet silk threading can be a dirt magnet.

Daily Storage

Store your pearls away from hard gemstones and metals. I like silky pouches for both traveling and home storage.

In addition, keep pearl stands at home flat instead of hanging them on a necklace tree or in an armoire. The silk thread is also organic and can stretch just a bit.

Also, just like you and me, we need a bit of moisture and we like to breath. I prefer to stay away from plastic zip bags, safes and deposit boxes.

Also think about storing your pearls away from the chemicals and conditions to steer clear from. For example, store your pearls away from perfumes, cosmetics, skin and hair products. In addition, consider storing your pearls away from spaces where the pearls will be exposed to direct heat and light for long periods of time.

Maintenance

Maintain your pearls with regular checkups and restringing for necklaces. At home, you can check the setting a stringing by sight. Or take them into your expert jeweler for regular checkups. Every one to two years is generally recommended.

I hope these tips will help you wear, care and keep your pearls beautiful for years to come.
