2007 World Series of Poker Main Event Day 1D

Copyright (c) 2007-2021

2007 World Series of Poker Main Event Day 1D had a lot taking place today. For one we found out about the race car crash that Phil Hellmuth Jr. was in. Also the payout schedule came out and first place will pay $8,250,000 to the Main Event champion. On top of that we have lots of record setting stats, so lets get to it!

On Sunday July 8th, Phil Hellmuth was involved in a race car wreck during a show held at the RIO. He drove the vehicle that was sponsored by Ultimate Bet extremely fast when he hit the cinderblock barricade, and basically the car was totaled. Phil was pretty shaken, but walked away from the crash. Today July 9th, Phil Hellmuth arrived to play 2 1/2 hours after the start. He pulled up in a limo wearing a racing uniform and a helmet. There were 11 women representing the 11 bracelets that he won, and they escorted him from the parking lot, through the doors and down the corridor to the Amazon room to take his seat. He stated he was sore and stiff, but he has won bracelets being in more pain than what he was in after the accident. Once news of the crash was publicly released, some made statements to the effect that it may have just been a publicity stunt. Less than four hours later, he busted out of the Main Event. After the announcement was given of his bust, cheers and clapping were heard everywhere. It seemed that no one was sad to see Phil Hellmuth leave.

About the money, it is BIG. First place will have an instant millionaire taking home $8,250,000 USD. Plus of those who make the final table, the top 5 will become instant millionaires as well. Money will go to the top 621 finishers. One thing Harrah's has done differently is that the payout schedule was modified to allow those who make the money but do not make the final table, to make more than they did in 2006. Basically the plan was to spread the wealth. For example, according to Harrah's the 2006 Main Event would have paid $22,266 for 873rd through 775th places, up from the range of $14,605 to $15,512 in 2006. And the Main Event winner would have been paid $10,028,715, down from $12 million, with the runner up receiving $5,442,769, compared with $6,105,900. What this has achieved in 2007 is that last place will earn $20,320, which is significantly more than the $14,597 they would have seen last year.

Statistically, there were a total of 6,358 entries, making this year's Main Event the second largest live poker tournament ever played. In all, the 2007 WSOP generated a total prize pool of $159,796,918, with $59,796,918 of that just for the Main Event itself. Overall, the Main Event attendance numbers were higher than most of the forecasts because of the 'potential' dampening effect of the UIGEA. Each round of Day 1 grew with more and more players showing up. Officially, the numbers were for 1A -- 1,287 players, 1B -- 1,545 players, 1C -- 1,743 and 1D -- 1,783.

Bustouts a plenty took place during the last Day 1 round. 2006 Main Event winner Jamie Gold had his chance at a repeat title ended when his final all-in with Queen and 9 of spades lost out to an Ace high hand of another player. Other top players no longer in this tournament include Cyndy Violette, Ed Moncada, 2004 WPT Champion Martin de Knijff, Michael Gracz, Robert Williamson III, Erica Schoenberg, Steve Zolotow, Paul Darden, William Thorson, Antonio Esfandiari, Erick Lindgren, Tommy Vu, Marcello del Grosso, Freddy Deeb and WPT tournament champion Surinder Sunar. Beginning tomorrow, combination of these fields will start with Day 2A hosting players from Day 1A and 1B for another round of elimination through 6 levels of long and psychologically draining, emotionally devastating play.

The 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event Day 1B had 1,545 players enter this round of the tournament. Officials said they have approximately 1,600 that have pre-registered for Day 1C. So more than likely the numbers for this year's Main Event will not come close to the 8,773 total players in 2006. The dip in the numbers is highly related to the fact that Harrah's did not allow online poker rooms and online casinos to send their players to the Main Event or any other event in this years WSOP.
