Keep Burglars Happy – Don't Get A Surveillance System

Copyright (c) 2006-2012

So you are going to be away for a few days? Have you thought about visitors while you are gone? What will make a burglar take note of your home and what are some of the things that will be inviting to him?

  • One of the first things that your burglar will notice is a scraggily yard (this by itself might mean that you are trying to save a few bucks on lawn maintenance).

  • If there are newspapers cluttering your yard or your house is unlit at night our burglar pal will be sure to investigate further.

  • Occasionally, people leave notes and instructions on their front door including their return date. Now that will give our burglar buddy a big warm fuzzy.

  • And surely you aren't one of those people who leave a spare house key on top of the front door jam or underneath the doormat? It is amazing how many folks still do this. You might as well leave the front door open with a big welcome sign.

  • Do you have potted plants in plain sight? Ole' Burglar Buddy will look for signs of withering from lack of watering.

After convincing himself that this setup is for real, Burglar Buddy will start planning how to successfully complete his dirty deed.

His first priority: a fast, easy, undetected entry and exit.

  • A privacy fence is nice.

  • A dark alley behind your home is double nice.

  • Large shrubs in front of windows can be really helpful.

  • Sliding glass doors can be inviting for a pro.

  • Also, an exterior door without a deadbolt lock will please your uninvited guest. You might be surprised at the number of people who leave home without making sure all the windows and doors are locked. Hey, we have all done it at least once in our life.

  • A security company sign posted in your front yard, believe it or not, tells the burglar exactly what he is up against and what to plan for – the sign isn't the deterrent XYZ Security told you it would be. All this sign is really good for is free advertising for the security company.

If Burglar Buddy finds just a few of these niceties at your home, let's face it, you have done most of his work for him.

So, are you at the mercy of burglars? You don't have to be. There are many things that you can do to help safeguard your home when you are gone.

Make sure your home looks lived in.

    A few tips:

  • Most families today have multiple cars so ask a friendly neighbor to park one of their cars in your driveway at night.

  • Then get some plug-in timers to turn lights, a radio, or a television on and off at different times.

  • Arrange for someone to mow your lawn and maintain the yard to give the home a lived-in look.

  • Stop all deliveries or arrange for a neighbor to pick up your mail, newspapers and packages.

  • Have good locks on all of your doors and windows and make sure you make a final check just before leaving to see that all possible entries are secure.

  • If you have an alarm system – turn it on.

  • Tell your local police you plan to be away. Patrol officers may have the opportunity to periodically check your home.

Is there anything else you can do? You bet there is. In this electronic age there are some amazing things available.

    Get A Surveillance System

How about a four-channel wireless surveillance system? With wireless installation you can change your cameras and components hiding places whenever you want.

By adding surveillance computer software to your system, you can turn your home or office computer into a powerful, global-wide video surveillance system, quickly and easily. Imagine lying on the beach in the Bahamas and monitoring the inside of your home here in the good old USA.

If you wish to modify or update your wireless surveillance system, it can easily be done.

There are so many different kinds of hidden cameras that you can use. How about a hidden camera in your desk lamp, in a ceiling fixture, a clock, or in a food box? You can even buy infrared illuminators that are weatherproofed for outdoor use and can see in total darkness. There is no limit to where you can place hidden cameras.

Another important piece you might add to your surveillance system is a digital video recorder that could be useful for reference, possible evidence, or just plain amusement.

    Or Get A Dummy Camera

A dummy camera looks like the real thing with a flashing LED, a real video cable, and a weatherproof aluminum housing. And the best part – it installs easily. You can deter crime with a dummy camera – and they are cheap. The key to a dummy camera's success, however, is visibility. Remember, you want people to see it.

The bottom line is to consider all the preventive things you can do to safeguard your home – and do it.

Okay, you're a nice person and so am I and neither of us ever intend to have any trouble especially of the physical kind. But the possibility that you might be confronted by someone who plans on getting physical is real. Personally, I have been held up at gunpoint and one of my two brothers was targeted outside a mall movie theater a few years back. That's 2 out of 3 siblings. So what are your chances? What will you do about it?

Unquestionably, we live in a more dangerous world today. In the past it was common to leave our keys in the car, our doors unlocked, and let the children run through the neighborhood - it was okay, we knew everybody, it was safe. Crime was a distant thing and not something that was up close and personal.
