Order Your Prom Flowers Early

Copyright (c) 2007-2017

Prom season is upon us! And while there are lots of other exciting things going on, don't forget to get your prom flowers ordered early.

It is important to remember that prom season is also peak wedding season and many times falls on Mother's Day weekend. Therefore, popular flowers such as sweetheart roses, white roses and certain orchids used to create decorative body flowers are in high demand. Ordering your prom flowers at least two weeks in advance will ensure that your florist has time to get the flowers that you would like to have in your corsage or nosegay.

Florists know how important prom flowers are to their young customers and will be happy to work with you to make a special corsage. Florists are experts at customization. Show your florist the dress you will be wearing or a swatch of material from your dress and ask him or her to select an appropriate ribbon. Or you can ask to see what ribbons he or she has on hand and choose one yourself. You will be surprised by the variety of colors and textures available. Sometimes a combination of two ribbons together will set off your dress perfectly.

The two most popular styles for prom flowers are wrist corsages and small hand-held nosegays. Of course, you might prefer to have a piece made for your hair or to pin a small corsage on your evening bag. There is no set rule on what to wear, so go ahead and pick your own particular style.

The most popular flowers for proms are mini (or sweetheart) roses, standard roses, dendrobium orchids, alstroemeria lilies and other small flowers such as cornflowers, freesia, and wax flower. The color of your dress will help to determine which flowers will work best for you.

Once you have decided on the flowers you want for your corsage, have your florist show you some of the new and exciting accents that are available. Florists are creative people, and they are now incorporating crystals, colored jewels, pearls and even small lights in their special event pieces.

If you have your heart set on a certain corsage style or type of flower, then there is nothing wrong with letting your date know what you would like. You might suggest going to the florist shop together so you can order his boutonniere to match your corsage. It will be a fun excursion that will be a part of your whole prom experience.

If your can't manage to go to the florist together, you could show your date some pictures of styles you like and ask him which flowers he also likes. If he "doesn't care" or "doesn't know", pick what you like! As long as you stay within his budget, if you are happy, he will be too!

The most important thing to remember, is to order early! Your flowers can be really special if you give your florist a chance. If walk in on the day before the prom, or even worse, the day of the prom, and expect to walk out fifteen minutes later with anything other than a traditional, run-of-the-mill corsage (if you can even get that), you will be in for a big disappointment. After all, you aren't the only one going to the prom! And you will find that your high school is not the only one having a prom that weekend.

So, take the time to choose your corsage and boutonniere, order early and set a time for picking up your special flowers. While you are at the flower shop you may want to pick up a small bouquet to give to your mom or your dates' mom. It doesn't have to be large and expensive. A bunch of tulips or an assortment of fresh cut flowers will be a nice gesture any mom will appreciate.

Remember to put your flowers in the refrigerator in their box or plastic bag until it's time to leave for the evening. This helps to keep them fresh and looking good for your very special night out. Be sure to keep carnations away from fruit, as fruit gives off a gas that can damage the flower. When putting your corsage or boutonniere on, always have the stems down, the way the flower would be growing naturally.

To preserve your prom memories, dry your corsage by hanging it upside down for several weeks (this works best with roses and carnations; orchids may be too moist). Or press individual petals between sheets of paper and place the paper beneath heavy books for two to three weeks.

You can make potpourri by drying your corsage flowers and greenery in the hot sun or a warming oven. Petals should feel dry and slightly crisp.

Leaves should be brittle but not shattering. Then mix the dried floral material with powdered orris root (as a preservative) and add your choice of spices to scent the potpourri. Store this mixture in a covered container for 2 to 3 weeks and shake frequently, then fill a small satin or lace sachet bag or perfume bottle to create a very special keepsake. Make sure you save the ribbons and other special accents and tie them around the bottle or sachet to complete the memory.

So grab your flowers out of the refrigerator, let your parents "ooh" and "aah" over you, stand still for your pictures and smile. Then go out and have a great time. Have fun and be safe!
