Jessica Simpson's Daisy Days

Copyright (c) 2006-2012

Jessica Simpson recently brought eighties character Daisy Duke back to life on the big screen in the hit movie The Dukes of Hazzard. The movie took years to develop and cost about $53 million dollars to make. But, you can have your own daisies in less time and for a whole lot less money.

Daisies are among the most popular flowers in America. They come in a number of different varieties, including both annual and perennial varieties. Most people, when they think of the daisy, think of a snow-white blossom with a bright yellow "eye" in the center; this is the Shasta Daisy, and it is indeed the most popular perennial variety. The most popular of the annual varieties is the African Daisy.

Part of the appeal of daisies is the fact that they can be used in so many different ways. They make an attractive addition to any flowerbed and can also be grown in pots. Daisies are often used in flower arrangements, but are just as lovely in a loose bouquet. They're even a frequently used flower in wedding bouquets, boutonnieres, and centerpieces.

With as much use as daisies get, it's a good thing they're exceptionally easy to grow-so easy, in fact, that many beginning gardeners often choose to start by growing daisies. Since daisies can be started from seeds in a home garden, they're a very inexpensive flower to grow. And, when left to grow year after year, they will multiply in number leaving you with plants to spare. They grow best in full sun, but they aren't fussy, so they can also be grown in partial shade. The best soil for daisies is rich and well drained, but again, lesser quality soils will be fine as well.

Daisies grown from seed will not bloom the first year, but they will bloom the second year and every year after that. When the plants first begin to grow, you should provide them with a bit of general-purpose fertilizer so that the stems and leaves are strong and sturdy. However, once they've established themselves, you won't need to work with them much at all. Simply provide a bit of water when the weather is very dry, and leave the to grow.

If you want larger blossoms, you will need to feed the plants a fertilizer high in phosphorous just before they begin to bloom. In addition, you'll need to separate the clumps of plants every few years to promote larger flowers. To do so, dig up the plant and its root base and separate them into smaller clumps before replanting them. Plants that are not occasionally separated will become crowded, compete for nutrients, and yield small flowers.

It may have taken Jessica Simpson a lot of work to become Daisy, but you don't have to work nearly as hard to have beautiful daisies of your own. And, I guarantee that it won't cost you millions of dollars!
