A Brief History of Online Gambling
Copyright (c) 2009-2023 Skyler Ace
Gambling is said to be as old as organized society itself. There is evidence that the ancient societies of India, China, Greece and Rome all had some form of gambling culture. Some articles thought to be gambling implements dating back to about 2300 BCE have been found in China. A pair of dice dating from 1500 BCE has been found in Egypt.
So, the gambling we do today has a long history behind it. But one thing is for sure - those people who rolled the dice 3500 years ago would never, in their wildest imagination, conceived of anything like the internet gambling we know today. This has added a whole new dimension to gambling, making it possible for a person to sit in the comfort of his home and gamble at any time of the day or night, any day of the week. No more getting dressed and going to a casino. Gambling is on tap 24/7.
Online gambling has its root in the development of random number generator algorithms that enables software for games of chance to be developed. Online gambling became popular in the early 1990s; but was kept at a low level and was not given much publicity because of the uncertain legal status. In the mid 1990s the Caribbean islands of Antigua and Barbuda saw the future and legalized online gambling. While other countries soon followed suit, these two economies had the advantage of being first off the starting blocks and even today, the majority of online casinos are registered on these islands.
The first legal internet casino opened in 1996 and the rest, as the saying goes, is history! No one expected the industry to explode the way it did. It has become a way of life for people all over the world and according to a study done by Merrill Lynch; the online gaming industry is expected to reach a turnover of $48 billion by 2010. The industry has been growing exponentially over the years and seems to be immune from the effects of the current recession. While just about every other industry has suffered because of a fall in demand caused by tight money supply, online gaming has continued to grow. It is apparent that the charm of trying ones luck in the hope of winning some money only grows when other sources of income begin to shrink.
The resulting growth of the online gaming software industry saw spin off benefits, in all areas of software development; including those of online security systems. Online gaming software brought in various features and facilities that are now part of all forms of ecommerce. While security and encryption software was already in existence, the needs of the online gambling industry took the sophistication of programming to a whole new level to where today, online payments are as secure as any other form.
Today, online gambling seems to be seeing a repeat of the famous Las Vegas infighting, among the casinos that nearly brought the city to its financial knees in the late 1990s. Online casinos are today fighting each other for a larger share of the online gambling community by offering the same kind of extras the Vegas casinos did. You can find music, virtual strippers and everything you could expect in a real casino to keep you entertained while you chase the lucky win. The end result of the jostling for online wallets, will mean that a lot of the current players will fall by the wayside. Perhaps that will be a good thing with those who remain being the most highly professional and who can offer the best online gambling experience.
There are many theories as to why online gambling is so popular. Among the many reasons given are:
All the games available online are played in the same way as in traditional casinos, so there is no learning curve for the player.
The player can play whenever the mood takes him from the comfort of his home. This means that those who wish to can remain anonymous.
Because of their lower overheads, online casinos can afford to be more generous in their payouts.
Online casinos in their effort to attract members, offer a range of special features to tempt the online players.

myth as gambling. Many gamblers do believe in "good" and
"bad" luck, playing a part in their gambling success or failure
and often carry "good luck charms" or have rituals they perform
before going to play. Unless the belief in "luck" becomes
obsessive, it is usually harmless.

couple; his older brother Sean Preston turned one-year-old just

makes Spears and her family deliriously happy, high-end gift
retailers are probably thrilled, too. You see, the latest trend
in gift giving is to give extravagant gifts at the birth of a new
