Is Memory Loss Inevitable as we Age?
Copyright (c) 2006-2012 DBA AdPro Media Sales, All Rights Reserved
Written by: Kamau Austin
With the onset of modern medicine the expectation that human life will be extended and that every one will live to a ripe old age. The boundaries of what is considered normal and expected have been surpassed and now new rules are being written about the length and quality of life.
The biggest problem some people encounter as they age is a loss of short term memory. This problem exists not only in older people but also middle-aged and at times young people, as well. Characterizing memory loss as inevitable as we age is incorrect as research has shown that although some elderly do not have the same retention powers as their 20 something counterparts, some of them have an accurate memory of events and can retain them as well.
Research is continuously going on all around the globe to find out reasons and cure for the type of memory loss that comes with age but is not Alzheimer's related. Gerontology has been studied using longitudinal studies, which involves studying the life processes of people recruited at a young age and then carefully scrutinizing their pattern of live, their routines etc and then deducing the reasons behind memory loss in these subjects as they age.
During research some facts came to light about the people who retained their memory and were sharp and agile in old age. The facts that came to light are as follows -
The people who had been recruited and those who retained their memory and agility in old age too were the ones who exercised and kept themselves involved in physical activities regularly.
These people involved themselves with reading books, solving cross word puzzles and sharpening their brains through such exercises as opposed to spending countless hours in front of the television.
They were confident and brave in the face of challenges and did not bemoan their fortune. They were able to take the bad with the good as life dealt their hand.
An important inference can be drawn from this - which is that the more the brain is utilized the more it will retains its ability to function and its abilities will increase and if you don't use it you will lose it. After a group of young people in their early twenties learned how to juggle an MRI scan was performed on their brains after three months and an enlargement of gray matter was observed also the sheer number of brain cells had increased.
The basic key to keep your mind healthy and your memory intact is to keep yourself involved in activities that are creative and developmental, for instance learning musical instruments, solving puzzles, reading, debating, etc. These processes can probably be explained in that active people develop a sort of mental account that keeps them going forward rather than developing dementia.
Some doctors and researchers don't believe that mental activities are the only key to preventing memory. It is essential to know that not just mental exercises contribute to cognitive fitness but staying physically fit and active too help in healthy aging.
There are a lot of ways to ward of memory loss for instance maintaining a healthy diet, consuming less alcohol as you age and for that matter keeping as cheerful as you can to help keep depression at bay. As discussed above physical activity contributes to mental health. Following are a few ways in which that is accomplished.
Exercise helps in curbing the heart rate.
It helps regulate blood pressure.
It reduces the blood cholesterol.
It improves agility and mobility.
It also increases the flow of oxygen to the brain and makes the heart stronger.
It is essential for aging people to keep their blood pressures and cholesterol under control because these factors can be direct causes of dementia and strokes. A diet rich in vitamins C and E is recommended as they contain anti-oxidants that help prevent cell damage.
It is essential that smoking be eliminated, and that one strive to maintain an adequate body weight. Engage in stress reducing exercises to reduce levels of stress that can be harmful or even fatal.
Your diet can provide all of the nutrients you need , but supplements can also help to improve your memory. One such supplement is Neovar(tm). Neovar(tm) is an advanced supplement that has components that promote healthy memory and neurological functions. Neovar(tm) helps people who are otherwise healthy but are experiencing age-related changes in their memories, focus and cognitive abilities. Neovar(tm) is available at Amazon and at http://www.BODeStore.com.
The above suggestions and techniques will help prevent memory loss and diminishing mental functioning as you age.As we age we tend to grow conscious about our vital faculties. Some people tend to suffer from memory loss and this is a fear of many of us as we age. However where as these are natural processes, they are not inevitable and can be reversed.
You need to find out ways to keep your mind in perfect condition and prevent it from deteriorating with age. Physical exercise contributes to the development and maintenance of your physical self; similarly mental activities are essential for maintaining the power of your mind. A general way of doing this is to keep learning new skills that will keep your brain agile.
The more you learn the more your brain will grow. This active functioning of the brain leads to new connections between the cells and aids in the communication of cells. This activity is vital to increase the storage and retrieval process of your brain.
There are various methods and activities with which you could challenge your brain and improve not just your skills but also your brain functioning. The foremost activity that you can do is to read voraciously. Read items of interest to you or if you have no particular area that you want to concentrate on, read a varied and rich assortment of stories and news items to expand your mind.
You could also indulge in your hobby and take it up as your occupation; this will not only give you creative satisfaction but also will give you a sense of belonging to a community of professionals in your chosen field. Learn a musical instrument.
A new language can give you an enormous sense of accomplishment.
Crossword puzzles or playing Scrabble will improve your vocabulary.
Research has proved that mental decline can be averted with a consistent routine of physical exercise. Exercise promotes growth and blood flow in your body including the brain and it keeps you agile and alert. It is recommended to exercise at least 30 minutes daily.
Eating well contributes to good nutrition. As we age it is important to have healthy eating habits. A diet rich in fruits is very helpful since they contain anti-oxidants and will help prevent cholesterol from accumulating in your body. Alcohol should be consumed in moderation if at all.
In this world where things happen at break neck speed there are certain ill effects connected with this pace of life. Stress is an important factor that affects the human nervous system. Under stress the brain produces certain hormones that can be damaging if they persist for long periods. Chronic stress can make you feel depressed too. It is important to take breaks regularly; with periods of meditation and relaxation.
Smoking should be avoided as we age as it heightens the risk of Alzheimer's disease. It also can contribute damage to the nerves and the lungs.
Your blood sugar level and thyroid levels should be routinely checked as they are essential indicators of the proper functioning of your body and can have an affect on proper mental functioning.
It is important to supplement your diet if you do not always eat correctly. The best diet can still benefit from the extra nutrients that can come from proper supplementation. Neovar(tm) is a very advanced form of supplement that has ingredients that promote healthy memory and neurological functioning. Neovar(tm) helps people who are experiencing changes in their memories, their focus or their cognitive abilities. Neovar(tm) is available at Amazon and at http://www.BODeStore.com.
Keep yourself healthy and your mind sharp as you age and your memory will not fail you.
