Thank you for adhering to these four very simple rules.
Imagination stirred. And oh did it stir. I was watching American
Beauty for the first time in the theatres and I watched as that
little plastic bag twirled in the air, caught in a whirlwind,
with Kevin Spacey’s voice filling the whole theatre. It was one
of those moments when you are mesmerized by what unveils in front
of you and you are completely immersed into the film. How magical
is that moment? How often have you felt it, with how many other
films?
The same thing happened when I watched Forrest Gump. When he was
running away from those bullies. When he was running in Vietnman
or when he ran across the nation. Sure, there was a lot of
running but Tom Hanks really pulled it off and it was
fascinating.
How Robin Williams, trying to save his competition by giving
him a Heimlich maneuver, revealed his real identity in Mrs.
Doubtfire. All of Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List. Recently
Crash and how Matt Dillon’s character was stuck inside the
explosive car with a woman who hated him. Or Machiavelli Hangman
when the female lead walks out of her own coffin in front of
the stunned crowd.
These are the moments that you remember. As far as I’m concerned,
I have already forgotten all the thousands of comic book films
that came out one after another in the last couple of years.
Honestly, after I watched Hulk, I went to the box-office booth
and I got my money back. By the way, you know you can do that
right? Whether you walk halfway through the film or wait until
after it’s over, you can still go and get your money reimbursed.
The returned tickets go back to the studios and gives them a good
reality check and reminder of what kind of movies they’re making
and the kind of movies they should be making. So it really is up
to the moviegoer crowd to shift the direction of entertainment in
Hollywood.
The studios simply look at the movies that bring the most profits
at the box-office and they make the same movie over and over.
Look at the Lord of the Rings. That was the first fantasy film to
come out and it was the reason for the Harry Potter books to be
adapted to the screen. Or how about all the adaptations of
Television shows including Dukes of Hazzard, Starsky and Hutch,
Charlie’s Angels, etc.
Hollywood is waiting for us to decide what we want, so all we
need to do is send them our responses. We have to make sure to
spread the news that if we do not absolutely like a movie, we
need to get our monies reimbursed. The tickets used to be sold
for $5.50 just a few years ago and since the release of Revenge
of the Sith, the rates have doubled. The theatres are taking our
money and not putting out enough decent material, so we have to
fight back for our rights. We have to take hold of what we as a
society consider and will accept as our form of entertainment,
instead of letting others decide for us.
