After the great disappointments of this year including Steven
Spielberg’s War of the World with Tom Cruise and Memento director
Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, movie fans still have two
anticipated films to look forward to. The first is Superman
Returns, caped by the always-successful director Bryan Singer who
was behind such films as The Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil and the
ultra-successful X-Men part one and part two.
Brett Ratner of Rush Hour and Rush Hour 2 and Red Dragon was
originally signed on to direct the superhero film but due to some
creative differences, he had to drop out taking Anthony Hopkins
with him. Bryan Singer surprised many people when he insisted on
getting an unknown actor to play the man of steel. After a long
casting period, he finally decided to go with Brandon Routh
(pronounced like "South). This would mark Brandon Routh’s first
major motion picture which can be slightly worrisome, considering
whether he can pull this off or not. It’s one thing starting out
as a supporting actor and then carrying a whole movie on your
own, it’s completely different being thrown in the middle of the
world expecting miracles.
Bryan Singer has also made some interesting decisions about
Superman’s costume. Like the leather costumes accustomed to the
more recent superhero films, Superman Returns will have a simple
spandex costume without a lot of details. In interviews, Singer
has said that he wanted to stay true to the classic image of
Superman and didn’t want to stun the comic book fans by
stretching the style too much.
Superman Returns will fly into theatres just one month before the
second most anticipated film on the list: Machiavelli Hangman.
Although this film was made on a low-budget, it’s already being
claimed by many to be the film that will "revolutionize" the
world of filmmaking as we know it. The story is based on the
JFK assassination in 1963, but what truly sets this film apart
is the way it’s told. Memento did a good job as stretching the
boundaries of style by telling the film backwards. Machiavelli
Hangman uses a similar technique but is rumored to screen the
film on two screens inside the same theatre. A large mirror
structure around the audience will make the viewer feel as if
he is actually inside the movie.
Pulp Fiction turned the world upside down and The Sixth Sense was
another film that completely blew the horror genre out of the
water and reinvented a new way of storytelling. We are waiting
impatiently as these two films near their release dates and we
have our fingers crossed in heated anticipation.
