Dangers of Diet Pills and Drugs!
    Copyright © 2005, Pestilly Dita

Diet pills and drugs are being recommended and used quite
widely all over the world. Diet pills are supposed to help
the users by providing the calories necessary to carry out
the metabolic functions and reduce the intake of food. It
is true to some extent. At the beginning the user feels
comfortable enough to continue and they may help in bringing
his weight down for a while.

Once the pills are withdrawn, the person starts putting on
weight with vengeance. This defeats the very purpose of
    taking the pills.

Drugs are used for various purposes. There are anabolic
steroids, corticosteroids, and cough syrups, tonics and many
other drugs meant for the restoration of the normal health
of a person. The problem comes when they are used for
purposes other than they are meant for. Stanozolol is an
anabolic steroid which has been in the news in the recent
times for all the wrong reasons.

If we look back, we have the instances of athletes from the
erstwhile East Germany who were given anabolic steroids in
the seventies and eighties to enhance their performance. As
a result, they did very well in the Olympics and other
    competitions then.

Later the side effects surfaced. They were so pronounced
that some women athletes subsequently became men. Abuse of
anabolic steroids leads to fusion of the epiphyses i.e. bone
joints and makes a person appear like a midget. In old age,
a person loses his immunity because anabolic steroids affect
a person's ability to withstand disease.

Corticosteroids are to be used only in exigencies. Drugs
like betamethasone and dexamethasone belong to this class.
They are basically used to cure intractable health problems
like chronic pruritus, pyrexia which does not respond to
    normal treatment and severe infections.

The problem with this group of drugs is that they are
immunosuppressant and they compromise body's defense
mechanism, if not used properly. So the problem a person can
face is that he becomes susceptible to infections and the
body loses its natural ability to withstand any assault on
    its defenses.

Tonics are used by people to supplement diet and help them
recover fast and resume their normal work. But it has been
proved that tonics are at best placebos and do not measure
up to the expectations of people. They do not improve health
nor do they make a person strong. That is one side of the
problem. The other side is that some of them contain alcohol
which inevitably leads to their abuse. There are many
instances where these tonics with a high content of alcohol
in them were used as substitutes for alcoholic
    drinks.

An additional problem is that when given to children, these
tonics caused addiction in them. Cough syrups are expected
to help in reducing bouts of cough. Some of them contain
alcohol apart form chlorpheniramine and pseudoephedrine
which are meant to relieve cough.

Drugs like phenobarbitones and the diazepam group also cause
problems. They are used to regulate sleep or reduce tension.
Their abuse leads to death in extreme cases and to rebound
wakefulness and clouding of senses in general. These are
some of the dangers with drugs.
