    Lucas's Hollywood Empire

There are a few visionaries in Hollywood who have truly
revolutionized the way we look at movies today. Although Steven
Spielberg has had so many successful films that have done
incredibly at the box office, one couldn’t exactly say that
    he has been an innovator.

George Lucas on the other hand has created a whole empire with
his Star Wars trilogy and then the prequels that brought in
astounding revenues at the box office. While one is a gifted
storyteller, the other is more of a business man who understands
how marketing can truly attract the masses. His films are also
the ones that set up the rates for movie tickets. Several years
ago, the price for a movie ticket ranged from $4.50 to $6.50 but
with the release of the first Star Wars prequel (Episode I), AMC
theatres increased their rates to $7.50. A jump of a whole dollar
is a considerably bold move from such a big theatre company but
knowing the number of fanatical fans the film would attract, the
theatre didn’t feel that it would be a big risk.

Peter Jackson can also be referred to as another vision, whom
like Lucas, created an empire where he could make any movie he
pleases without having to answer to anyone. With his greatly
successful adaptations of the Lord of the Rings books, with a
single leap, he became one of the most powerful directors in
    Hollywood.

While many people complain about the big budget films like
Revenge of the Sith and Lord of the Rings and the coming-soon
King Kong, a lot of moviegoers flock to the theatres. We spend
outrageous amounts of money for admission and sometimes double
for foods and refreshments inside. Titanic was a huge success but
just like these gigantic films, it seemed to lack a good story to
go head to head with all the special effects and production
design. Unfortunately, story always seems to be the first thing
that is scarified for the sake of big budget.

On the other hand, smaller movies like Crash, Machiavelli Hangman
and Sideways are overlooked by the Academy. While these lower
budget films are the ones that truly deserve the recognition,
the bigger films take the Oscar and run with it and perhaps one
    could say "buy the Oscar."

It is going to be interesting to see what Lucas will take on
next, now that the three prequels of Star Wars have been
released. He has made a career out of marketing the Star Wars
films and I think it is finally time for him to move on to
something else. And whatever the project he may choose, it will
surely big a great hit only because George Lucas stamped his name
    on it.
