With an online home business your efforts and skills are
important but in different areas as compared to a
traditional business. Here are the skill I consider to
be essential when running an internet business.
1. Tools
Choosing the best tools for your business. This is important as
a reliable and effective tool which performs as you expect is
one of the reasons for your business' success.
It performs the job you require which will please your
customers/prospects. It also saves you time.
A reliable autoresponder for example, will effectively follow up
with your prospects and will enble you to communicate to them
regularly. This means more sales for you and most importantly,
less time required for you to manage your business.
Choosing a wrong autoresponder may mean loss of sales and
increase in frustration time.
There are several other tools which you should investigate and
choose carefully for your online business. This includes method
for receiving payment, software to build your pages,
web hosting, accountanting software, membership scripts,
SEO submission techniques etc...
2. Copywriting
This is the most profitable skill you can have. If you can write
enticing sales copy for your website and also write effective
advertisements for your business, then you basically have a
skill that can create money anytime you want.
It is words which persuade a person to buy. It is words which
attract a person's attention and make him notice your product.
Copywriting can make or break your business.
If you have a skill that you would like to develop for your
home business, then copywriting is the number one choice
everytime. You don't have to worry about your own business,
people will queue up to pay you to write sales copy for them.
3. Networking
Another skill that's very handy to have is networking. The more
people you know, the more sales you will get and the more
ideas you will have.
Just because your home business is online, doesn't mean
that you don't need to speak to people. Infact, networking
is one of the fastest and most reliable ways to get more
customers and increase your email list.
Get to know people on the forums, give them a ring, speak to
people at forums etc... Ask them to advertise your product to
their email lists, ask them for advice on how to manage certain
areas of their business, what tools are useful etc...

4. Time Management
A lot of our times are spent aimlessly at the computer browsing
websites when you should be working on your own business.
Managing your time is important when you want to achieve things.
Wasting time will make your business stagnant.

5 Testing and Tracking
Not many home business owners do this but it is one of the most
important skills to have which will improve your sales,
reduce cost and have less headaches.
Always test your website and your advertisements and study
the results. Do not use the version that is inferior.
If you have 2 advertisements, track their responses to
your website. Throw away the ad which is less effective.
Using this technique you will know which ad is best therefore
you will be maximizing your dollars.
Without testing & tracking, you'll never know which
advertisements or which version of your website is bringing you
the sales. You could be spending huge amounts of money on an
ad which is bringing you few customers.
6. Leverage
Successful home business owners will pay people to do all the
nitty gritty work while they spend their time on improving the
business and marketing the business.
Pay people to answer customer support emails, develop websites
and even research the market for you. Concentrate on
marketing your business and think of ways to improve it.
That is where the money is.
7. Please the customer
Make sure you have enough tricks and ideas on making the
customer happy. A happy customer is valuable as they bring you
repeated business. A happy customer will also tell others about
how well your business has treated them.
They will help you advertise.
8. The Mindset
You must have the right mindset to do well with your
online home business. Remember that the sky's the limit,
and that you should never give up when the going gets tough.
Failures normally give up easily.
Having an optimistic and 'never give up mindset'
will get you far in your business.
