Title: Machiavelli Hangman
United States, 2005
Running Length: 1:50
Director: Shervin Youssefian
Producer: Art Nazarian
Screenplay: Shervin Youssefian
I have always said that a comedy has to be so genuine and pure
that it could hold up an audience’s attention for a full two
hours, without having to rely heavily on bad taste. Within the
first ten minutes of Machiavelli Hangman, I realized that it
wasn’t going to be your ordinary comedy. In fact, I was hoping
that it wasn’t going to be your ordinary comedy. I had been let
down one too many times, especially recently with Wedding
Crashers and hundreds of those Ben Stiller films that came out
recently back to back including Meet the Fockers.
Most of the time, I wish that the films were reduced to half
their length because they did not offer any solid satisfaction or
reason for them to be as long as they are. In this case, I felt
that Machiavelli Hangman wasn’t long enough even though it’s two
hours long. The jokes came as fast as in a Marx Brothers comedy,
rapid firing at you before you have any time to settle.
The ensemble cast is extraordinarily natural together as if they
had rehearsed their whole lives to be in this film. While Quentin
Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction categorized the different sections of
the film, Machiavelli Hangman incorporates everyone and creates a
feeling that the whole two hours is just one big scene. Reservoir
dogs did that quite nicely and that was the main reason why it
became the launching board for Quentin Tarantino’s career.
Speaking of careers, Shervin Youssefian’s career stemmed out of a
commercial background which also explains the fast editing and
the beautiful imagery. Unlike his counterparts, however, he does
understand the importance of silence and beats. Michael Bay for
instance doesn’t let the audience breathe for a moment and the
quick editing style doesn’t leave any time to enjoy the superb
cinematography in his films.
The strength of Machiavelli Hangman lies in not what it shows you
but in what it doesn’t. Youssefian lets you use your imagination
most of the time by giving you just enough to let the engines in
your head run. Did he kill her? Did she escape? Did the car fall
off over? And before you know it, you actually start answering
those questions and letting them take you down the wrong path.
And you realize this until it’s too late and the truth is
revealed.
Machiavelli Hangman takes you through twists and turns and it
manages to slip in a great message in the plot. Verdict: It’s
one of the must-see films of the year.

|
- Stand out from the crowds. Educate your prospects and they will turn to you for more knowledge. When they turn to you for more, they will visit your website. It is up to your website copy to sell your products, NOT your article. Provide great information and at your website, address how the prospect will benefit from what you are offering. Using these things in conjuction will help your cash register to ring.
