You may have never heard of me before today, and that is fine if you haven't.
Perhaps you will recognize the names of some of our clients shown in the right-hand sidebar of this page. The folks in that list are the authors, who have syndicated the largest number of articles through our article syndication service.
If you know the names of any of our clients, and you first discovered that person in an article they had written, then we may have contributed to your knowledge of that person.
We Did Not Create Online Article Syndication, But We Are The Longest Surviving Article Syndication Service On The Internet
I started doing article marketing early in 2000, and I started offering article ghost writing later in the same year. In September of 2001, I parted ways with my previous partner and started The Phantom Writers.
Through this website, I have been providing my clients with article ghostwriting and article syndication services, for close to a decade now.
With our article syndication services, also known as "article distribution services", we specialize in putting our clients' articles into the hands of online newsletter publishers, bloggers and webmasters, who desire to publish the kind of content that our clients produce.
Rather than sending articles to hundreds of article directories, we strive to deliver the most appropriate articles to the most appropriate online publishers, people who will be most likely to publish the articles we send to them.
We have been building relationships with the publishers, who publish our clients' articles, for more than a decade.
In sales and marketing, the goal is to deliver the most appropriate sales message to the most appropriate audience, in order to optimize the opportunity to get the sale.
Our approach to article marketing is very similar -- to put the most appropriate article into the hands of the online publishers who are most likely to publish the article, to increase the likelihood of the article being chosen for publication and to have the article presented to the publisher's audience.
As a writer myself, I want my articles presented to the largest possible audience of real people -- prospects for those items that I promote in my Author's Resource Box.
I suspect that you are not too much different than I am, when it comes to your desire to reach the widest possible audience with your article content.

We Have Been Around Since Before Article Marketing Became Popular and Went Main Stream
I started writing articles for the Internet and doing article marketing back in the "before times", before Internet Marketers realized that article marketing was useful for getting good rankings in the search engines.
Back in those days, there were maybe five article directories and they all had real editorial standards!
In that distant time, not so long ago, authors and article marketers understood that the best newsletters and websites are operated by people who want to give "real value" to their audiences. Article authors and marketers understood that in order to have the opportunity to talk to a publisher's audience that they had to present the publisher "quality content" that the publisher's audience wanted to read.
Success with "article marketing" was determined primarily by the "very real value" that we gave the publisher and his or her audience / readers.
Before 2005, If You Did Article Marketing, the Quality of your Content Would Determine How Successful You Were in These Activities
In 2005, it all went upside down and wrong.
That was when Internet Marketers realized that they could influence their Google rankings, by using article marketing as a link building method. A few otherwise intelligent people began telling people that Google counted all links the same way, therefore, "quality content" no longer mattered.
And so it is today... Many people still think that quality just doesn't have any real value anymore in article marketing.
Some of us still do article marketing -- as we had done it before "article marketing" entered the lexicon of SEO vendors around the world -- by focusing on the wants and needs of our readers and not worrying too much about the search engines.
The curious thing about that is that the more I ignore the search engines, the better I seem to rank with them. Take this website for example. Out of the 272,000 unique visitors this website received in 2010, 95,000 of those unique visitors (35% of my traffic) arrived on this website as the result of a direct link in Google's search engine listings.
When Google released their Google Panda Update in March of 2011, the whole Internet Marketing community was up in arms over how, "Google killed article marketing..."
The reality is that only websites with a lot of low-quality articles were hurt by Google Panda, and those websites were only hurt by a reduction in traffic from Google.
What a lot of people fail to realize is that with good quality articles, you are bound to get more traffic from your articles than you do from Google -- the same as I do!
Here are some numbers for you to contemplate from Sistrix, showing the "Drop In Traffic Received from Google" from before, to after the Google Panda Update:
- Articles Base -94%
- Suite 101 -94%
- Associated Content -93%
- Ezine Articles -90%
- Find Articles -90%
- Hub Pages -87%
- Buzzle -85%
Now contrast those numbers to this website and its article directory...
Immediately after Google Panda, we saw a 10% uptick in traffic. This website is actually on track to see an increase in traffic of 12% for the year to 308,000 unique visitors in 2011.
I might be interpreting these numbers wrong...
But it seems to me that Google still loves article marketing AND quality content.
The Primary Question Is: How Does One Define "Quality Content"?
We all know what "quality content" looks like when we see it...
But, how do we understand it so that we can create it?
The definition of "quality content" really depends upon which side of the fence you sit...
How Does Google Define "Quality Content"?
Google has the harder job in this mix. Google must be able to look at things that they can actually measure, in order to discover "quality content".
"Articles" will never die, because the Internet is all about sharing information in a text, audio, video or conversational format. So you have to ask yourself the difference between an article, a blog post, and a sales page, in the eyes of the Google search algorithms... There is no difference really, and this is why "article marketing" can never actually die.
So, how does Google define "quality content"?
Google can only track those things that its computer algorithms can identify, and Google insists that it tries to factor in the "social metrics" that they have deemed useful.
Google understands that Internet Marketers are always trying to manufacture the factors that will influence Google in a positive way towards the marketers' website.
In response, Google is trying to identify and discount "manufactured popularity", so that they can better identify and credit "real popularity", i.e. "organic popularity".
To better understand how Google defines "quality content", you must understand what "social metrics" the Google algorithm can rely upon.
Because the Google algorithm is a computer program, it must look for patterns in activity to see what to discount and what to credit, because the only real tools it has at its disposal is inbound links and social feedback on the content.
Sure, we can write articles, put them on websites, then create social media bookmarks and comments about those articles. But consider this...
If we follow the same patterns every time we put out an article: we tweet it with our Twitter account, we Like it on our FaceBook account, and we post it on the same 150 article directories every time, then Google can see our "marketing footprint".
If every article we circulate has the exact same "marketing footprint", then Google could rightfully deduce that the articles linking to your website only offer "manufactured popularity", and what value can there be for any article that lacks "organic popularity"?
In our book, those who have mastered the art of "organic popularity" are those who can afford to let the open marketplace decide what articles to reprint...
In other words, those who gain the most value in the Google ranking game are those who create good quality content that authority publishers "want to publish", publishers whose audiences are active enough to want to link to the articles through blog posts and social media outlets.
The more diversity that Google can see in your "marketing footprint", including links to your articles and websites, the more Google will view you as having "organic popularity" and the more likely Google will see your articles and websites as good-quality content with real value to share.
How Do We Replicate "Quality Content" In Our Articles?
Let's start with the basics... What do YOU want to see in an article?
If you are like the average person, you want information that you can use to help you to solve a problem or understand something better, or you want to be entertained...
When possible, you are happy to be informed and entertained at the same time...
But the greatest challenge is to be informed and entertained, in a format the is easy-to-read and easy-to-consume as a reader.
As a writer, one of the easiest ways to accomplish all of these goals is to tell a story that people will enjoy reading...
People love stories, regardless of whether they are reading fiction or non-fiction.
In a nutshell, you must be able to give people "real value". When people have finished reading your article, they should be happy to have invested their time in reading what you have written.
Consider this...
"Authority Publishers" are publishers who have large and loyal audiences of readers, whom you would like to get a chance to address with your articles.
"Authority Publishers" are called that because they consistently give their readers what they want to read, and their readers respond by coming back to the publishers' newsletter or website often.
The only way that you will get the opportunity to speak to the "Authority Publishers" audience is to give the publisher what he/she thinks his/her audience would enjoy reading.
As a result of "the way things really are", to be truly successful as an article marketer, you will want to:
- Give the publisher the kind of content needed to keep the loyalty and interest of its readers;
- Give readers the kind of content they need to become "informed", "educated" and/or "entertained", while at the same time, leading the reader to follow the link in your Author's Resource Box to your website or offer.
Give publishers what they want, and they will give you access to their readers.
Give readers what they want, and they will visit the link in your Author's Resource Box, frequently and often, ready and willing to spend their money with you.
When You Are Ready To Step Up To "Old School Article Marketing" Principles, We Will Help You Find Your Audiences
Our article syndication services get results for the people who understand how to get the most value from it.
We distribute articles for some of the biggest names on the Internet, and we always have.
Not every article is a "winner" or a "grand slam", but if you follow quality with consistency, you will find the process going your way more often.
The greatest baseball player in the history of the game had a batting average of .367, which means that he hit the ball an average of once for every three at-bats.
If the professional hitters only hit one-in-three, the chances of you doing better out of the gate are slim.
As a professional article marketer, I don't even hit one-in-three, but I do put out enough material to hit it big enough times to make the process worth while to me.
One of my customers had purchased and distributed ten articles with me.
After the tenth article, she contacted me and asked, "Could you take a close look at my articles and tell me what I am doing wrong? I have tried to write good quality content, but I am not seeing the results I expected to see."
I looked at her articles and thought that they were very good.
I suggested that there are actually a number of factors that could influence whether one particular article gets picked up by an authority publisher or not. And many of those factors are outside our control and yours.
She decided to try another ten articles, and we proceeded forward.
After her 14th article, she got in touch with me. She was over-the-moon happy!!
She said that she had made so much money from that one article, that she could afford to keep writing and syndicating articles for the next five years!!
She is still on my customer list years later.
She hit her first "grand slam" on her 14th article. I usually hit around 1-in-6.
If you are committed to doing article marketing the right way, and you are firmly committed to your success, then the sky is the limit.
